Would a 50A panel be achieved by just replacing the main power contractor with a 50A model and protecting the entire panel with a 50A GFCI? Looking to be able to fire both elements at the same time.

Power supply wires must match AWG for 50 amp, protected with a 50 amp GFCI.

A few changes would be needed to the control panel.

Wires which will have 50 amp on it must be exchanged with 6 AWG.

The main contactor must be rated 50 amp.

Replace the element selector switch with 2 on/off switches.

You have to protect the 10 AWG wire by adding 30 amp fuses to the element receptacles.

For example (same needs to be done for the boil receptacle):

Any questions, just let me know!

  • So pretty sure I bought the wrong inline fuse holder. These are huge and I noticed they are for 600v. Oops. Would the regular 30amp car fuses ATC/ATL work INLINE? I can find those local.

OMG!  ?  That's really big! I hope you can still return it.

Should be something like this (about 3.5 x 2.5 x 1.3 inches):

https://www.amazon.com/Mersen-Spring-Reinforced-Connector-Ampere/dp/B002E7UI2C/ref=sr_1_fkmr1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1524182423&sr=8-3-fkmr1&keywords=2+pole+fuse+holder+240V+30+amp

Any fuse holder rated at 240V/30AMP will work.

Thank you Michael for all the help. I will just order these and call it good. Thankfully the other ones were not that expensive. Live and learn I guess.

My pleasure! Just make sure that you get the right fuse that fits in the holder. Should be 30 AMP fast blow.

Any progress with the troubleshooting? Did you test with a multi-meter?

Would it make more sense to locates these fuses between the main and subsequent contactors, so we can limit the amount of 50a 6awg inside the box?

I’m sorry for the late response…I was away over the Holidays.

You will need the 6 AWG wire on the entire high voltage circuit, even if you put the fuses elsewhere.

@michael would the 50 amp contactor be 120v or 240v?

@mrpete2003

It would still be 240V and the coil 120V, same as the 30amp version.
